Is it legal to take Ayahuasca at a retreat?
No retreat participant is breaking the law by taking Ayahuasca because the ceremony takes place on Spanish territory. Under the laws of the Kingdom of Spain, psychotropic substances of natural and synthetic origin are decriminalised. That is, public distribution is prohibited, but private use is allowed. Since the participants of the retreat are outside the city in a closed villa, it is considered a private practice and therefore completely legal.
Is it mentally safe?
If your mental state is unstable or if you have a predisposition to such risks, then there is a possibility of complications. This is why we first guide all potential retreat participants through counselling with a psychotherapist. If a participant’s psyche has a risk of not coping, then we will report it and not allow them to attend the retreat.
What is the likelihood of experiencing a bad trip?
First, it’s important to understand the nature of bad trips. What is it? It is when your attention goes completely into some problem, external or internal stimulus, due to which a panic attack begins. Essentially, this condition only occurs in people because of prior anxiety.
When there is a high probability of getting a badtrip:
- if a person did not feel comfortable before using Ayahuasca
- if the use was not conscious, without some moral preparedness
- if before taking Ayahuasca initially there were doubts, worries, or distrust. But if you take Ayahuasca in a good mood, from a conscious position, with full trust in the place and everything that is happening — then there is no probability to catch a badtrip.
The most important thing is a relaxed psyche, no stiffness, no tension, no doubts. That is why our retreat programme consists of 70% of various practices — bodily and spiritual. And for additional measures during the ceremony there are sitters in the room — specialists who observe the state of the participants and provide support in case of signs of anxiety.
